There are speculations that the Mumbai local train service may start in the first week of September for general passengers. The Central Railway (CR) administration has said that the decision to start the locomotive will be taken soon.

Shalabh Goel, Divisional Manager of Central Railway, has informed that the railway administration is all set up to start the local train service in Mumbai once the state government gives permission.

The local train service in the metropolitan has been shut for general passengers for the last five months due to the coronavirus outbreak. However, the services are operational for employees working in the state and central government.

The decision to start public transport services entirely depends on the Maharashtra government. Goel said that once the railway ministry accepts the demand of the state government to start local train services for general passengers, the administration will commence the same.

Currently, the local train service has started for essential service personnel. However, after the unlocking process and reopening of private offices, the demand to start local trains for general passengers has intensified as many are facing inconvenience.

The fourth phase of unlocking will commence from September 1 and the government may provide more relaxations. The decision to reopen colleges and schools may not be taken, given the increasing number of cases in the area. However, the central government is likely to allow local trains, metro trains, single-screen theatres, among others.

According to sources, the Railways are to soon discuss the issue of overcrowding with the state government and the municipal corporation. There might be a change in the office timings in Mumbai to accommodate the massive number of people.
