Prime minister, Narendra Modi, on September 28, 2022, approved the proposal of Indian Railways' station redevelopment plan for three major railway stations across India. As per reports, a total investment of this redevelopment plan is expected to be INR 10,000 crores. 

Following stations have been considered for the development project in this space: New Delhi railway station, Ahmedabad Railway Station and Mumbai's Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).

Emphasising on the importance of railway stations at these locations, said that these stations require a transformation and railways should contribute to making this effective. He also instructed and gave new directions for the station development. Data shared by the department reveals that a total of PM Modi199 stations across India are being redeveloped, of which tenders have been issued for 47 stations. So far planning and designing for the remaining stations is currently underway. Meanwhile, 32 stations are being redeveloped and the work at these stations is progressing fast. 

Sharing more details with regards to the elements of the new design, officials from the railways said that each station will have a spacious roof plaza which will include amenities for cafeteria, recreational facilities and retail spaces. The stations will also cover and connect both sides of the city, with a station building which will include both sides of railway tracks. Furthermore, amenities like food court, playing area for children, a place to sell local products, waiting lounge and more will be added at the stations.

All the stations and respective buildings will also be strategically located at a place close to the city centre, to ensure passengers comfort is noted. Additional facilities, like signage, acoustics lifts, escalators and illumination will also be considered. The master plan for the station is being prepared keeping the traffic parking facilities and other logistical aspects in mind. Officials are also considering other modes of transportation like bus, metro etc. to be integrated with the stations. Moreover, all the three stations will also function on solar energy along with aspects like water conservation, recycling, improved tree, cover etc. are being kept in mind as per green building techniques.

Needs of the handicapped and disabled passengers will also be taken care. Keeping the concept of intelligent building in mind, officials are planning proper segregation of arrivals and departures along with clutterfully free platforms, improved surfaces and fully covered platforms. 

Safety will also be the utmost priority at the stations and hence CCTVs and access controls are being installed at all stations. Lastly, the government has directed the department to ensure that the station buildings look and feel iconic.
