On May 25, the domestic flight service resumed from Mumbai after two months owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. There was a lot of confusion in regard to the resuming of flights. The state government announced on Sunday its decision to limit flight movements to only 50 i.e. arrival of 25 flights and departure of 25 flights. The Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) handled 47 arrivals and departures throughout the day. On the first day, the airport witnessed more people leaving than arriving in Mumbai as 1,100 people came back to the city whereas 3,752 left from Mumbai.

The airport usually handles 1.3 lakh passengers every day on average but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, only 4,852 were handled by MIAL on May 25. The first flight left from Mumbai for Patna at 6:45 am whereas the first flight arrived at Mumbai International Airport at 8:20 from Lucknow. The busiest route was Mumbai-Delhi as 12 out of the 47 flights left or arrived from/at the airport. Other routes consisted of flights to/from Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, Patna, Varanasi, Nagpur, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Allahabad, Kozhikode, Diu, Gorakhpur, and Jaipur.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Airport only handled 47 flights as against the 220 flights cleared last week by the civil aviation ministry. There were heated exchanges among the passengers and the airline staff after nearly three-fourths of the flights were canceled following the state's decision to limit flight movements.

Alongside, Railways had earlier announced cancellations of tickets of all passengers of special trains whose stations fall within the state of Maharashtra after the state government prohibited inter-district travel.
