Maharashtra has imposed restrictions to prevent the spread of coronavirus, which have affected various businesses. Even autorickshaw drivers are bearing the brunt of this lockdown. With this in mind, the state government has decided to provide assistance to autorickshaw drivers.

A sum of INR 108 crores has been allocated to provide INR 1,500 each as one-time relief amid coronavirus-induced restrictions to 7.20 lakh licensed autorickshaw drivers in Maharashtra, an official said on Sunday, May 9. The government notification on this was issued on May 7, he added.

The money will be deposited directly in the accounts of drivers who will have to upload permit, badge, vehicle and Aadhaar card details to be eligible for the relief package, the official informed. Moreover, INR 1500 each has been given to street vendors and housemaids in the state.

However, even before the curbs were implemented under the 'Break the Chain' campaign, the Maharashtra government had announced to provide financial assistance to those who are facing employment problems.

Maharashtra is one of the worst-hit states in the pandemic. It has been observing a strict lockdown for a while now. It is expected that the lockdown in the state will be extended till May 31, 2021.

As a result of the consistent efforts of BMC and the restrictions that have been put in place have helped in bringing down the number of cases. On May 12,  Mumbai records 2116 new COVID-19 cases, 66 fatalities. The city also posted 4,293 recoveries in the past 24 hours.
