GRP introduces new helpline number '1512' to help commuters

Crime in moving trains have increased quite drastically and many times, women commuting in a train find it difficult to take action against perverts. Considering the need, the Government Railway Police (GRP) is planning to launch a special railway helpline -1512 - to help commuters to connect to the nearest on-duty policeman.

This will be facilitated by an ultra-modern control room and the helpline number would help commuters to report crimes directly which will be tackled quickly. The GRP is hoping to reduce the response time to less than five minutes.

The GRP took this initiative to tackle the crimes committed on trains and platforms in less time. Currently, when a distressed person calls the control room, their staff answers the calls and passes on the information to the ground staff who then respond. During this phase, the train moves on. Meanwhile, the new helpline number will connect the commuter directly to an on-duty policeman.

Also, with the help of GPS, the control room staff will connect the caller to an officer through conferencing.

How does it work?
If someone reports a crime from Thane and if the train leaves, the caller will be connected to the GRP personnel at the next stop. The moment the train reaches the next station, police will be standing outside the compartment.

GRP commissioner Niket Kaushik believes that this helpline number will curb crimes such as theft, fights among commuters, complaints of lost baggage and crime against women.
