The new Year has started with a double whammy for the common man. While people are still trying to work their budgets around the rising prices of onion, fuel (petrol and diesel), there has been an increase in the prices of LPG, and also for the Indian railways.

From today (January 1), the fares of the non-suburban section of trains have been increased by 1 paise/ km for ordinary and non-AC class trains, 2 paise/km for mail/express non-AC coaches and 4 paise/km for AC class fare of all categories, which includes AC chair car.AC 3-tier, AC 2-tier, and AC First class coaches. The silver lining is that people who have already have bought their tickets before January 1 will not have to pay the fare difference.

The only relief for the Mumbaikars is that Indian Railways has announced that there will be no increase in the prices of suburban train tickets and season passes. A senior official while commenting on the price hike said, “The railways has decided to marginally affect an increase in fare only over the non-suburban sections-...there shall be no fare hike for passengers over suburban sections and season ticket-holders. This class constitutes 66% of total passenger segment over Indian Railways,” said a senior railway official.

In a statement issued Railways also mention, "In order to expand passenger amenities and facilities at various railway stations and trains, it has become imperative to increase the fare marginally without overburdening any class of passengers. Fast modernization of Indian Railways will be achieved through this fare revision".

In the current scheme of things, there will be no increase in the catering charges.
