Kalyan, LTT, and Thane listed among the top 10 dirtiest stations in the country

Passengers who were surveyed said they were not happy with the cleanliness at these stations. However, officials have confirmed that efforts are being taken now to improve the situation.

In a survey conducted by the Indian Railways recently, Kanpur has been termed as the dirtiest station in the country while three stations from Mumbai - Kalyan, Thane and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) - also made it to the list of top 10 dirtiest stations. Kalyan was in the third position,  LTT on the fifth, and Thane on the sixth position.

Passengers who were surveyed said that 58.74 per cent of the people were not happy with the cleanliness at Kalyan. Around 55.89 per cent people said that they are not happy with the cleanliness at LTT and 55.72 said that they are not happy with Thane.

A senior railway officer told Mumbai Mirror, that they call passengers and take their feedback through Interactive Voice Response System on six criteria – cleanliness of stations and trains, catering, air-conditioning, food, punctuality, and bedrolls.

Efforts are made to make approximately one lakh calls per day to passengers. The feedback will help improve passenger amenities and also help fix accountability of service providers.”

An officer working with Central Railway who handles all three stations said that efforts are being taken now to improve the cleanliness of stations.

At LTT, the contract for mechanised cleaning was awarded last month. At Kalyan and Thane, the contract process is going on. Very soon it will be placed,” he said. 

He added that due to the shortage of water, he finds it difficult to maintain the cleanliness of LTT station which is visited by approximately 50,000 where on a daily basis.
