As per the report submitted by IIT-B, 97-year-old Delisle Road overbridge’s iron cast pillars are rusted and need to be reconstructed

Post-Gokhale bridge collapse between Andheri and Vile Parle railway station on June 28, the Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had asked IIT-B to inspect all bridges in the suburban section. Likewise, IIT-B along with Indian Railways and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) started a structural audit of 445 bridges. IIT-B submitted the first report after inspecting the bridges, advising to shut vehicular movement at Delisle Road overbridge at Lower Parel.

IIT-B has advised changing the rusted iron-cast pillars of 97-year-old Delisle Road overbridge that was built in 1921. The Western Railways (WR) wrote to the BMC, asking to reconstruct the bridge. The BMC then replied to the WR asking them to reconstruct the bridge that falls in their jurisdiction. The WR then replied to the BMC suggesting that they replicate the work done on Hancock bridge and reconstruct the same in minimal time.

The inspection will be carried out in two phases wherein railway officials will inspect during the night with the help of tower wagon. Until now, IIT-B has completed the inspection of a few bridges of which, inspection of 8 bridges has been done by the railway officials while inspection of other three bridges was carried out by railways, IIT-B and the BMC. Additional three bridges will be inspected by a team of railway officials.

On July 3, 2018, around 7:40 am, a part of Gokhale bridge collapsed on the railway track between Andheri and Vile Parle disrupting Western Railway services. Four fire brigade vehicles were rushed to the site. 36-year-old Asmita Katkar, who was grievously injured in the accident, succumbed after five days of the incident. Other than this, four others were admitted to Cooper Hospital but luckily survived the deadly accident.
