According to sources, Mahalakshmi and Charni Road stations, which are historical stations on the Western Railway, will get a new lease of life. Moreover, a tender process has been initiated and a contractor has been appointed for the same. In addition, the project will include the renovation of the station building and other facilities for the passengers.

Meanwhile, reconstruction of both the stations is currently closed as a result of the strict restrictions that have been imposed due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.

Earlier, an inspection of the Mahalakshmi railway station had revealed that the elevated station building was dangerous. In a report, it was further mentioned that the building has a ticket window facility and passengers enter the station from the same elevated building. After the submission of the report by IIT, Mumbai, Western Railways has decided to renovate the elevated station building and provide better facilities to the passengers there.

On the other hand, the Charni Road station will also be transformed. The building at this station will be constructed with a new ticket window facility, separate service for ATVM, station master's office, main station superintendent's office. For this, the tender process has been completed and a contractor has been appointed.

Furthermore, ample space is being provided for the passengers at Mahalakshmi and Charni road stations where the work has already started. These include enlarging the entrance, toilets in the building, installing drinking water systems, ticket windows, ATVs etc.
