According to the latest reports, considering reports of rising cases of electric bikes exploding and catching fire, the transport commissioner's office has asked the Regional Transport Offices (RTO) to assess and take action against those e-bikes manufacturers selling high-voltage batteries for the motors.

Based on accounts, Avinash Dhakne, Maharashtra transport commissioner has told the RTOs to register police complaints about modifications against e-bike manufacturers. For this, a special drive has been initiated.

It has been reported, that in accordance with the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, those e-bikes that have a battery capacity of under 250 watts, as well as a speed limit of 25 kmph, are exempted from motor vehicle taxes and registration. However, the vehicles have to be certified by some institutions that have government authorisation.

The circular reportedly elaborates on how certain vehicle manufacturers are selling e-bikes without a certificate from a recognized organisation. It added that e-bikes are also being illegally modified by increasing the battery capacity to over 250 watts. This, the authority believes poses a considerable risk to road safety, in addition to it being sold illegally. The circular also cites the recurring nature of e-bikes catching fire, accounts state.

Narratives suggest that citizens have been asked to check their vehicle certification as well as unauthorised vehicle alterations. Some reports claim that manufacturers are fitting e-bikes with higher capacity batteries to increase their speed.
