The Government of Maharashtra has relaxed coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown restrictions across some districts as the number of cases have dropped significantly. Several activities have resumed in the city of Mumbai, with malls, gyms, pubs etc. resuming their operations for the general public. However, the government has not allowed the public to travel by the Mumbai local train.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, on Monday, August 2, 2021, said that the public cannot travel in the trains due to the predicted third COVID-19 wave in mind. This decision has disappointed commuters in Mumbai and the nearby metropolitan region (MMR) who have been awaiting positive response from the government since the last few days.

Issuing clarification regarding the same, State Health Minister Rajesh Tope said that the decision was taken considering several aspects and after thorough discussions. Discussions regarding the same have been postponed for the time being. He added that the demands are being made however, the CM has to also note other consequences regarding ways to check the vaccination certificate, procedure to allow people at the stations, managing crowd at the stations and in the trains, etc. It is expected that once the permission has been granted, a large number of citizens will begin travelling in the train and in such cases, checking the certificate and following the procedure would become difficult especially during peak hours.

These aspects pose difficulty for the railway officials and hence rushing into the matter to give permission was not wise as the consequences faced could be serious. Hence, the CM denied the permission as of now and the same has been postponed. Decisions would be taken later after consulting with the people.

Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court (HC) also raised questions regarding the same and ask the government about the reason behind not allowing fully vaccinated citizens in the local train. The court said that the people have not taken the vaccine to be at home, and their daily lives have to resume, for which commute has to be allowed in the local trains.

As of now, no decision has been taken to reopen the temples in Mumbai. Matters will be discussed with the officials and the restrictions would be lifted after due to consideration, for which people will have to wait for few more weeks.
