On Tuesday, November 3, the Centre’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade wrote to the Maharashtra government, asking it to halt the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) from developing the car shed at Kanjurmarg.

The government led by CM Uddhav Thackeray had earlier decided to shift the metro car shed in Aarey to Kanjurmarg in order to protect the greenery at the Aarey forests which led to the BJP leaders slamming the state government. However, despite the criticism, the site was handed over to MMRDA and permission was granted to build a car shed for both Metro 3 and Metro 6 routes.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray has asserted that he was aware of the letter sent to the state Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar, however, claimed that the work on the metro car shed would not be stopped. “The land does not belong to the government of India, it belongs to the state government,” the Shiv Sena leader had added in a statement.

In the past, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on October 11, made a big announcement stating that the controversial metro car shed in Aarey Colony would be shifted to government land at Kanjurmarg. He also clarified that there will be zero cost for this. On the other hand, the decision of the state government to shift the metro car shed from Aarey to Kanjurmarg has been deemed unfortunate and arrogant by the opposition. Devendra Fadnavis, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, speaking to the media had stated that if the Metro car shed is shifted to Kanjur Marg, an additional ₹4,000 crores will have to be spent.
