As coronavirus cases witnessed a downward trend in Maharashtra, the demand for resumption of local train services for the general public is growing louder with political leaders and passenger associations appealing to the Maharashtra government to allow the commoners to travel on Mumbai’s suburban locals.
However, the Uddhav Thackeray-led state government has not taken any decision.
Therefore, Janata Dal Maharashtra Pradesh committee has started an agitation and has demanded to resume the local train services for the general public.

The agitation was led by Janata Dal's Maharashtra Pradesh General Secretary Ravi Bhilane. Meanwhile, Mumbai General Secretary Jyoti Badekar and other party representatives also joined the protest. Later, the party sent an official statement putting forward the demand to the general manager of the western railway at its headquarters in Churchgate.
Jyoti Badekar informed that the railway administration has promised to convey this demand to the government. Meanwhile, Railway Passengers Association, ordinary citizens and political leaders have earlier staged agitation to start local travel. Therefore, it will be important to see whether the state government responds positively to the agitation.
Over the last few days, members from the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) have demanded the state government to allow fully vaccinated citizens in the local train.
Mumbai local trains, known as the lifeline of the city, have been operational currently only for essential service employees. The state government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have restricted the general public to travel on the local trains.
This decision has not been appreciated by the people as the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has affected the livelihoods for many months now, where people have not been able to earn their living due to the restrictions imposed by the body.
