In a latest development, the first phase of the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway will be thrown open for the public on May 2 after Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s inauguration.
Mumbai-Nagpur supercommunication expressway between Nagpur and Shelu Bazaar in Washim district is a stretch of 210 km, whereas the second phase consists of 310 km stretch from Shelu Bazaar to Shirdi. This will be opened for motorists on August 15.
This development came days after the Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde reviewed the first phase of the green highway at Nagpur on Friday, April 22.
It is said that once fully operational, the Mumbai-Nagpur expressway, which is being executed by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), will cut travel time between the two cities from 14-15 hours to nearly eight hours.
The Mumbai Nagpur Expressway will also have CCTV cameras and free telephone booths every 5 km in case of emergencies.
It will be officially called Hindu Hridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg. Overall there are 76 underpasses on the highway. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is carrying out the project at a cost of over INR 55,000 crores.
Officials stated that it will take 40 years to recover the total cost. Initial toll will be around INR 1,200 for cars. The toll amount will rise by 16 per cent every three years. An estimated 35,000 vehicles are expected to use the E-way soon after its full commissioning, which is expected in 2023 as work on the Mumbai-Shirdi section is still ongoing.
The E-way will host a 250MW solar power project, while the decision to build a high-speed railway along the route will be taken by Centre, said urban development minister Eknath Shinde. Moreover, 12 lakh trees will be planted along the entire median.
