On Tuesday, October 12, the government issued an order stating that domestic airlines can operate their domestic flights at full capacity from October 18, Monday. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has stated that after they reviewed the current air travel demand, they decided to ease the restrictions.

In an order issued earlier, the domestic carriers in September were operating at 85 per cent of their pre-COVID-19 domestic flights. Reportedly, between June and July, the capacity cap was 50%, while from July to August, the cap was at 65%.

As per reports, after a two-month break, the government had resumed scheduled domestic flights in May 2020, but the capacity cap was not more than 33 per cent, as per the ministry orders.

The decision was taken after a credit rating agency stated that the domestic air passenger traffic had seen growth by 2-3% in September as compared to August.

In layman terms, capacity cap refers to the " number of flights or departures that an airline can order as a percentage of a schedule during a season." Meanwhile, Mumbai Airport's Terminal One (T1) will resume its domestic operations from Wednesday, October 13.
