According to the latest reports, an aggregate of 15,185 additional striking staffers of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) resumed duty on Monday, April 18. Of the 90,000 personnel who were on strike, 61,647 have resumed operations since the commencement of the strike last year, cited accounts.
Earlier this month, the Bombay High Court while disposing of a plea moved by the MSRTC against the trade union and others, had asked the employees to resume operations by April 22. In addition to this, it asked the Maharashtra government to not take any coercive action against those on strike once they resume work. It also mentioned that earlier action should be withdrawn.
An official was quoted in narratives elaborating on how since the judiciary's order a total of 25,000 new employees have returned causing the aggregate number of those on duty to climb to 61,647. This the official believes signifies the possible end of the strike and the complete opening of the MSRTC bus services.
For those unversed, MSRTC staffers have been on strike since November last year demanding that the state-owned corporation be merged with the Maharashtra government. They wished for this to happen so that they could access the benefits of being government employees.
