The environmentalists whose petition was dismissed by the Bombay High Court regarding tree slaughtering for Metro-3 project have challenged the High Court order in the Supreme Court on Tuesday. Save Tree member Zoru Bathena expected that the hearing on their petition will be started in next 2-3 days. It is to be mentioned here that the High Court had lifted the ban on slaughtering of trees for Metro-3 project but it had given a limit of 10 days to the petitioners to approach the Apex Court and till then the ban will be in force.

Parveena Jahangir and Neena Verma of Save Tree organisation had filed a petition in the High Court against tree felling for Metro-3 project in February last. The HC had stayed the tree slaughtering but it lifted it last week. The HC had given time of 10 days to the petitioners to challenge its decision in the Supreme Court and till then (May 15) ban order will be in force.

“We respect the High Court decision but it has disappointed us. The issue of environment degradation in Mumbai will become very grave if such a large scale tree felling is done for the Metro-3 project. Now, we hope that Supreme Court will give us justice,” said the petitioners.
