Mumbaikars here's a piece of good news for you. The Maharashtra government recently approved the implementation of "happy hours" for auto rickshaws, slashing the fare prices by 15 per cent between 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. A government resolution was passed for the same which was based on recommendations made by the Khatua panel.
However, the government rejected the four-member panel's recommendation for local kaali peeli cabs and app-based taxis.
The GR also mentions that the maximum fare app-based cabs can charge (on surge) should be no more than three times the base price (₹14.85 per kilometre) of the kaali-peeli cabs (for similar distance). This move was taken by the union to compete with the app-based cabs.
State Transport Authority (STA) has been assigned the job of revising the fare structure for Mumbai and MMR regions. The state government has formed a four-member panel to analyse the report submitted by the previous panel in 2012.
While the happy hours come as a piece of good news for the passengers, the decision has irked autorickshaw drivers and unions. Shashank Rao, the leader of the Mumbai Auto-rickshaw Men's Union said they would oppose the happy hour discount.
Here are some of the accepted recommendations for autorickshaws and kaali-peeli:
