Soon, Mumbaikars will only have to use a single smart-card to travel in public transport including monorail, metro, local trains and buses as the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking may become the first public transport operator to implement the centre’s 'one nation one card' system.

Ahead of BEST’s foundation day on August 7, BEST General Manager Surendrakumar Bagde, in a press conference, informed that they will be starting this as a pilot project by November this year on a few routes and will take a call on expanding the same accordingly.

At present, BEST is testing the mobile application developed as a part of their Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) which will track buses across the city. Bagde further informed that BEST is working with Centre for Development of Advanced Computing and Bharat Electricals Limited to develop automatic fare collection (AFC) system and Electronic Ticket Issuing Machine (ETIM), respectively.

If the city’s suburban railway, metro and mono railways manage to overcome their technical difficulties, the BEST smart card can also be used in the said public transport . Until then, the same will be eligible for utilising in the buses.
