A train running on the 'Colaba - Bandra - Seepz - Aarey Underground Metro 3' route experienced a technical malfunction in the afternoon. Though the passengers were evacuated safely, this incident has raised questions about the safety of passengers traveling on the underground metro.

The Aarey-Acharya Atre Chowk Metro Line of MMRC's 33.5 km Metro 3 Line is currently operational. A train heading towards Acharya Atre Chowk Metro Station on this metro line was suddenly stopped at Santacruz Metro Station at 2.44 pm on Friday, October 3. The train experienced a technical fault and sparks suddenly started flying from the train, followed by smoke and a burning smell. This incident scared the passengers and caused chaos. The train was then stopped at Santacruz Metro station and the passengers were evacuated. The train was then taken to the BKC Loop Line for technical inspection. The passengers were taken on another train. No major accident occurred this time, but the incident has raised questions about the safety of the underground metro.

For the past few days, there have been continuous incidents of metro and mono trains being shut down due to technical glitches, trapping passengers. In August, two mono trains were stuck. The fire brigade had to break open the door of one of the two monorail trains and evacuate the passengers. Even after this, the monorail train stopped, leaving the passengers stranded.

Finally, MMRDA has taken up the modernisation of the monorail by temporarily suspending the monorail service. On the other hand, a few days ago, a train that left for a test run on the Metro 9 (Dahisar to Mira-Bhayander) line was stuck at the Owaripada station on the Metro 7 (Dahisar to Gundvali) line due to a technical fault in the morning. As a result, traffic on Metro Line 7 was disrupted for some time. Despite being touted as international-standard projects, both the Metro and Monorail systems have been experiencing frequent technical glitches. These recurring breakdowns are putting passengers’ safety at risk, raising serious questions about the quality and safety standards of these infrastructure projects.
