The Maharashtra government has started a feasibility study into new infrastructure projects for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). These include underground parking for metro stations, water taxis, and ropeways.

State transport minister Pratap Sarnaik said government bodies have been asked to prepare detailed reports within two to three months. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Maharashtra Maritime Board, state transport department, and urban development department are involved in the process.

Parking Areas

The underground parking lots will reduce congestion in Mumbai. These parking malls will be located beneath metro stations. They will include commercial and office spaces above ground. The government hopes this will help address the city’s parking shortage.

As of December 2024, MMR has around 13 million cars. Panvel has 2.1 million, Thane has 5.7 million, and Mumbai has 5 million. The construction of these underground parking lots may lead to more road digging in the city.

Water Taxis

Authorities are also considering water taxis as a mode of transport. The city has explored water-based transit in the past. A plan to run catamarans between Navi Mumbai and Nariman Point was previously abandoned.

The new water taxi project will involve the Maharashtra Maritime Board, MMRDA, and the transport department. The maritime board will prepare the project report, while MMRDA will develop infrastructure. The transport department will manage operations.

Ropeways

The ropeway project is also under review. In 2019, MMRDA suggested two ropeways. One was a 7.2-km Mahavir Nagar-Gorai corridor costing INR 575 crore. The other was a 3.6-km Charkop-Marve corridor costing INR 383 crore.

Tenders were invited, but the project did not move forward. The state is now looking for new locations for ropeway construction. Areas with upcoming high-rise developments may not be included.

Pod Taxi

Another transport plan under review is the pod-taxi system in the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). The 8.8-km route will have 38 stations. A pod taxi will stop every 15 seconds between Bandra East and Kurla.
