The management of BEST has recently conducted a crackdown on the BEST employees. As many as 6,279 workers have resumed work which includes drivers, conductors, and staffers. This stringent action would help BEST run more buses around the regular routes.
On July 12, the BEST administration has issued departmental charge sheets to over 1,000 staffers from the transport wing and 700 from the power supply division for remaining absent for a period of 15 days to over two months. The next day over 15,000 staffers lost their salary for the month of May for failing to report for emergency duties such as ferrying employees and migrants and fixing cable faults and power cuts. Earlier, the BEST had decided to operate outside Mumbai as per the "Mission Begin Again" movement initiated by the Government of Maharashtra. Many workplaces have started functioning with 10 per cent employees. In view of this, the Best Administration has approved transportation for office goers as well. Shop goers can also travel on the buses of Best. The buses are said to run from Virar, Nalasopara, Kalyan, Badlapur and Panvel.
The BEST had earlier launched services on feeder routes from this week onwards. A feeder line is a peripheral route that connects remote nodes with a route carrying heavier traffic. The BEST launched this service on feeder routes along the highways and arterial roads in order to provide better connectivity to essential service workers or the people to go to offices.
BEST has also been serving the citizens of Mumbai at the risk of their own lives. Before the lockdown, BEST was serving 31 to 32 lakh passengers regularly. However, at the moment, due to lack of manpower, 4 to 5 lakh passengers are being served. On June 8, BEST carried 4.19 lakh passengers, while the next day it added 54,000 passengers. Best is also known to distribute vitamin tablets and conduct fever checks with the outbreak of coronavirus to safeguard the safety of their employees and passengers.
