A corroded bridge located at a distance of 100 metres from Tilak Nagar railway station was demolished by Central Railway during a mega block on Sunday. The bridge provided east-west connectivity between Tilak Nagar and Chembur areas.
The FOB was inspected by railway officers on Thursday who declared the bridge to be safe and that trains could run below it. However, due to increasing demands from the commuters and activists, the decision to demolish the bridge was taken in a joint meeting of the railways and the civic body.

According to commuters, the bridge was built decades ago to cross the tracks and the adjoining nullah when harbour line trains ran only up till Mankhurd and Tilak Nagar station did not exist. They asked the bridge to be removed as it was in a very dangerous condition. The structure was completely corroded while concrete slabs were missing on both ends.
