The 15-car locals are available only on the fast route between Churchgate and Virar which has over 54 services. This 15-car local proves to be conducive in reducing overcrowding at stations and trains as compared to the 12-car local.

In a recent announcement, Western Railway's Chief Public Relations Officer Ravinder Bhakar stated that 3 extra coaches will be added to over 120 local trains by the end of 2020. This move will in turn increase passenger capacity by 1.2 lakhs per day.
Ravinder Bhakar further said that the extension work is being carried on specifically between Andheri and Virar as maximum commuters are on that route. Currently, during peak hours, the trains run with a headway of four minutes, however, to serve the increasing number of passengers, it wouldn't have been feasible for Railway authorities to increase the frequency in trains, therefore, they decided to increase the number of coaches to accommodate the passengers.
Notably, Western Railway had recently announced that the AC Local trains will now be running during weekends as well.
