Maharashtra CM flags off trial run for two metro corridors; Here's everything you should know

The Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday, May 31, flagged off trial runs for the city’s two new metro rail lines on the Charkop-Dahisar-Aarey route of Metro 2A and 7. With this, the wait of suburban passengers to travel in the metro will soon be over. 

The maiden trial run commenced from Aakurli Metro station on Western Express stationwhich will go on for four-five months after which the first phase will start in October and both the lines would be completely operational by January 2022.

Along with Thackeray, many leaders of Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government including Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar, Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde, Environment and Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray, Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat among others, were present.

The oscillation trial of the prototype six-car rake will be conducted on Line 2A (Yellow Line) and Line 7 (Red Line) at various speeds. The sub-systems, other equipment will be tested under dynamic conditions. Integration with signalling, telecom and Platform Screen Doors will be tested along with different safety tests, said Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) spokesperson.

Once the oscillation trials are completed, the train-set will then be offered to the commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) for inspection and certification.

METRO LINE 7

Metro Line 7 from Andheri (East) to Dahisar (East) is 16.475-km long elevated corridor with 13 stations.

It shall provide interconnectivity among the existing Western Express Highway, Western Railway, Metro Line 1 (Ghatkopar to Versova), the ongoing Metro Line 2A (Dahisar to D N Nagar) and the proposed Metro Line 6 (Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli).

It shall facilitate smooth and efficient interchange with the suburban rail system and MRT system at Andheri, JVLR and Dahisar.

It shall provide connectivity between Central Mumbai and the Northern suburban Mumbai

It shall provide rail based access to the Mumbai International Airport (CSIA), SEEPZ, National Park and other commercial and geographical landmarks.

A dedicated depot is planned at Dahisar to an extent of 15 hectares.

It shall reduce the current travel time by anything between 50 per cent and 75 per cent depending on road conditions.

METRO LINE 2A

Metro Line 2A from Dahisar to D N Nagar is 18.589-km. long elevated corridor with 17 stations.

It shall provide interconnectivity among the existing Western Express Highway, Western Railway, Metro Line 1 (Ghatkopar to Versova), the ongoing Metro Lines 2B (D N Nagar to Mandale) & 7 (Andheri (E) to Dahisar (E)) and the proposed Metro Line 6 (Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli).

It shall facilitate smooth and efficient interchange with the suburban rail system and MRT system at Dahisar and D N Nagar.

It shall provide connectivity between the Western, Central Mumbai and the Northern suburban Mumbai.

It shall provide rail based access to the commercial and geographical landmarks in Mumbai.

It shall reduce the current travel time by anything between 50 per cent and 75 per cent depending on road conditions.

What are the ticket prices?

0-3 km – INR 10

3-12 km – INR 20

12-18 km – INR 30

18-24 km – INR 40

24-30 km – INR 50

30-36 km – INR 60

36-42 km – INR 70

42-48 km – INR 80

The total cost for the two metro lines is approximately INR 12,800 crores, of which around INR 6,000 crores have been spent to date. In addition, another 10 trains will arrive before October 2021. The total distance of these two corridors is comprising 35 km.

Both these Metro lines were sanctioned by the state government on October 6, 2015. The Bhoomipujan was performed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 11, 2015.
