After installing Wi-Fi connections at various railway stations across Mumbai, the Central Railways is now planning to provide internet connectivity in 3,465 coaches in 165 locomotives.
The project, which has been stalled for the last one and a half years due to pandemic, will be completed before the new year. Hence, by early 2022, passengers can get free Wi-Fi service in local trains, said railway administrations.
Central Railway had announced two years ago that it would provide 'pre-loaded' internet service to Mumbai local commuters.
Under the 'Content of Demand', the Wi-Fi facility that will be installed locally will include pre-loaded movies, series and songs. Passengers only need to turn on the mobile Wi-Fi. Later, passengers will be able to view 'pre-loaded' information on their mobile.
In 2016, the first Wi-Fi facility was provided at Mumbai Central. In 5 years, Western Railway (WR) has come a long way in providing internet facilities at 468 stations, including 90 stations in the Mumbai division.
The number of users of these stations using Wi-Fi facilities is steadily increasing and we plan to install such facilities for commuters at more stations, said WR officials.
As part of Digital India, WR has introduced technology-oriented passenger applications/amenities like National Train Enquiry System and the Passenger Reservation System, which has improved passenger travel experience. And now Wi-Fi is another such commuter-friendly facility.
