On Thursday, October 22, long queues of women passengers were witnessed outside Diva and Nallasopara railway stations on the Mumbai suburban network.

As Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal permitted women to travel on the suburban railway system from Wednesday, booking counters saw long queues of women passengers as only a limited number of counters were open. However, responding to the complaints, the Railways has stated that additional booking counters were opened and the crowd was immediately managed.

The Maharashtra government earlier on October 16 requested the Railways to permit women to commute by local trains during the non-peak hours - from 11 am to 3 pm, and from 7 pm till the end of the day's services. However, as a result of the restricted timings for their travels, several women commuters have expressed their displeasure stating that the timings were not suited for their working hours. They have demanded the government to make changes in its decision. Furthermore, the passengers informed that some of them have to reach their workplaces at 10:00 in the morning. They objected to the timings which allowed them to travel via local trains only after 11:00 AM elucidating its inconveniences.

So far, only employees of the state and central governments and those working in the essential sector such as nationalised and private banks were permitted to travel via the local trains in view of the pandemic.
