The Income Tax Department is launching a new e-Filing portal on the 7th of June as per a notice sent by the Directorate of Income Tax Systems to all field units. The notice went on to say that the portal will be unavailable for department officers and taxpayers from June 1 until June 6. Keeping this in mind, officers have been asked not to set any compliance dates during this time frame.

“In preparation for the transition to the new system, the existing e-Filing portal will not be available to both taxpayers as well as department officers for a period of six days from June 1 to June 6,” the notice read.

Additionally, income tax officers have been asked to schedule any compliances or hearings after June 10 so that taxpayers have enough time to get used to the newly launched portal. Meanwhile, pre-scheduled hearings may be postponed to anytime after June 10 or held prior to June 1.

The e-filing portal is used by income tax authorities such as chief income tax officers, principal commissioner of income tax, and others to engage with taxpayers through e-proceedings on the portal.

Officials also use the portal to issue show-cause notices, summons, letters or questionnaires pertaining to outstanding taxes, exemptions, penalties, among other tasks. Taxpayers use this online portal to file their income tax returns and view other relevant details.
