Omicron Scare: Tanzania Returnee Tests Positive For COVID-19 In Mumbai’s Dharavi

In Mumbai’s Dharavi area, a man who had returned from Tanzania tested positive for coronavirus, stated reports. In light of this, Mumbai Mayor, Kishori Pednekar stated that his samples have been sent for genome sequencing.

This is being undertaken to examine the presence of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. According to reports, Pednekar elaborated that a suspected patient of Omicron has been found in Dharavi. Adding that the individual arrived from Tanzania and tested positive coronavirus.

She mentioned that his samples have been sent for genome sequencing and his test results are now awaited. Additionally, he was also admitted to the hospital after testing positive. Based on accounts, Pednekar also brought to light that the man’s close contacts are also being tested.

Moreover, his travel history is also being probed. During this, she also mentioned that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is undertaking the requisite measures. The mayor added that if those arriving from “at-risk” countries test positive, they are examined and treated at a COVID-19 designated hospital.

On Saturday, December 4, Pednekar mentioned that 288 samples of foreign returnees were sent for genome sequencing and their test results are awaited. On the same day, a South Africa returnee to Kalyan-Dombivali, tested positive for the Omicron variant of COVID-19, making it the first case in the state.

On Sunday, December 5, seven new samples in Maharashtra were found to be infected with the new Omicron variant from the Pune Metropolitan Region.
