In a major concern for Maharashtra, as many as seven new samples in the state were found to be infected with the Omicron variant of coronavirus disease on Sunday, December 5.

Of the total cases reported from Pune Metropolitan Region -- six cases detected from Pimpri Chinchwad and one case was registered from Pune – said state public health department. Nearly 6 patients are asymptomatic at present. However, one patient has mild symptoms.

 With this, the total cases of new strain have risen to eight in Maharashtra, while the nationwide tally reached 12.

Meanwhile, it has come to light that all six from Pimpri Chinchwad, a township near Pune, belong to a same family -- a woman and her two daughters who travelled from Nigeria, her brother and his two daughters.

Doctor said that all patients are being treated at the Jijamata Hospital in Pimpri-Chinchwad and are stable.

“Till now, 16 people found COVID-19 positive. Out of these 16 people, six have tested positive for the Omicron variant. Genome sequencing reports of 10 people are still awaited,” Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Patil was quoted as saying by ANI.

He also said that the administration is vigilant over this issue, adding, “we will soon issue guidelines to restrict large gatherings in the city. We appeal to citizens to strictly follow COVID-appropriate behavior.”

Moreover, out of the six people, there might be a sigh of relief as three adults have taken both doses of vaccine – 2 have taken Covishield and 1 has taken Covaxin. Though three are under 18 years of age and therefore have not taken any vaccine.

Besides, one male who travelled from Finland have tested positive for the new variant in Maharashtra. Reports stated that he was tested due to mild fever on November 29 and was found to be COVID-19 positive. He has taken both doses of Covishield vaccine and is completely stable without any symptoms.

A day earlier, a 34-year-old man from Kalyan-Dombivli with a travel history from South Africa, had tested positive for the virus.
