In Maharashtra, a total of 45,168 electric vehicles (EVs) were sold during January–February 2026, according to data from Clean Mobility Shift. This marks a 19% increase compared to 37,848 vehicles sold in the same period last year.
The ongoing conflict in West Asia has highlighted the vulnerabilities in the fuel supply chain, reinforcing the need to reduce dependence on petrol and diesel.
The growth is primarily seen in the personal vehicle segment. During January–February 2026, sales of electric two-wheelers and four-wheelers reached 34,570 units, with 20,135 EVs sold in February alone.
In contrast, sales of electric three-wheelers used for commercial transport and shared mobility showed only marginal growth, rising from 3,278 units to 3,368 units. Currently, the EV transition is largely happening at the household level, with significant changes in freight and public transport sectors yet to materialise.
To encourage adoption, the state government has allocated INR 246 crore under the Electric Vehicle Policy 2025 for 2026–27, aimed at promoting both private and public electric mobility. While industry players have welcomed the move, they have also noted that the subsidy amount remains insufficient.
