The city of Mumbai has witnessed a sharp rise in air pollution over the past few days. Contaminated air was reported in many places including Mumbai city, suburbs and Navi Mumbai.

On the other hand, due to the cold rainy weather, the climate in Mumbai is getting colder and more humid. According to Mumbai's Air Quality Index, published by the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), the city's AQI was more than 300 a few days ago. Moreover, bad weather was reported in Colaba, Mazgaon, Worli, Bandra, Kurla, Malad, Bhandup and Chembur in Mumbai. The worst affected areas were Colaba (332), Malad (332), BKC (336) and Borivali (303).

What is the cause of the increase in pollution?

The winds coming to Mumbai a few days ago were coming from the east. Along with that, the humidity had increased. So whatever the particles of pollution are, they settle on that vapour thus making the air heavy. These heavy particles stay close to the ground increasing the pollution levels.

Consequences of air pollution:

The biggest impact of air pollution is on the elderly and young children. Also, people with diseases like heart disease, respiratory diseases, cancer have a higher health risk. In addition, increasing pollution levels cause itchy eyes and dry skin.

Therefore, children, senior citizens, patients suffering from asthma need to take care of themselves after the pollution increases. It is important for sick people to eat on time, take medicine, and eat a good and protein-rich diet. It is also important to include more vitamin C in your diet in order to protect yourself.
