BMC receives 99,000 applications from hawkers seeking licence

Earlier, the civic body has given space to 17,000 hawkers and 15,000 positions will be given to the newly eligible hawkers. A total of 32,00 hawkers will be given position on 404 roads in Mumbai.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently invited applications from hawkers for providing them licences for 15,000 positions and nearly 99,000 applications were sent for the same. 

Of the total applications received, the BMC declared 84,000 of them ineligible. Earlier, the civic body has given space to 17,000 hawkers and 15,000 positions will be given to the newly eligible hawkers. A total of 32,00 hawkers will be given position on 404 roads in Mumbai. 

Exactly 99,435 hawkers submitted their application to the BMC. However, the civic body in Mumbai has decided to provide 15,361 hawkers with the license after receiving complaints from the citizens. 1,745 objects were registered with the BMC against hawkers occupying spaces on roads. 

BMC earlier surveyed 1.28 lakh hawkers in all 24 wards across the city. The eligible hawkers will be allotted positions on the basis of the lottery. Earlier, 85,891 hawkers were allotted space on 1,366 roads in all 24 wards 

The objections and suggestions were discussed in a meeting with the corporators and appropriate changes were made in this regard. As this happened, the BMC allotted space to 30,832 hawkers on 404 roads in Mumbai.
