A ground plus three-storey building collapsed in Bhiwandi in Thane district around 4:00 in the morning on Monday. The death toll in the Bhiwandi building collapse incident has risen to 16 while more than 10 people are still trapped under the debris. 

Rescue operations were undertaken by Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF) throughout the night in search of the survivors under the debris of the dilapidated structure. 

Nearly 20 to 25 people were rescued safely and 20 were injured in the incident. According to Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BNMC), nearly 24 flats of the building collapsed out of the 48.

Maharashtra Uran Development Minister Eknath Shinde has also announced ex-gratia worth ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased. Shinde, senior Shiv Sena leader, is also the guardian minister of Thane district. 

The building collapse happened at 3:40 in the morning on Monday in Bhiwandi. Most of the people were asleep when the incident took place. It is learnt that the building was in a dilapidated condition and it worsened due to the ongoing rains in Mumbai. 

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has expressed grief over the building collapse incident. There were 21 families living in the building and 16 people including seven children have been killed in the incident. 

Meanwhile, two civic officials have been suspended after the building collapse incident and an offence has been registered against the building owner. It is being said that the building was not in the list of dilapidated structures of the BNMC.
