The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), on Tuesday, January 5, 2021, decided to take action against 1,500 housing societies and hotels in the city regarding improper disposal of waste. Information regarding the same was shared recently which stated that the action will be taken against those housing societies and hotels which generate more than a hundred kilos of waste per day.

As per law, the wet and dry waste need to be separated and observing a failure with the same, the municipal body has initiated legal action against these societies and hotels for violating the waste disposal rule. Lawsuits will be filed at the court soon.

The rule states that societies and hotels with an area of more than 20,000 square meters and generating more than 100 kg of waste per day have to follow the mandatory rule imposed by the municipality to sort the waste accordingly and process the wet waste to further convert the same to compost. Societies and hotels had earlier failed to do so, and the municipality has repeatedly given extensions to set up the project. However, no steps have been taken regarding the same or to set up the project. Therefore, now the corporation will take action against 1500 societies.

Data reveals that the corporation has so far issued notices to 3,125 housing societies and hotels, out of which 1,619 waste disposal projects have been completed. The remaining societies were given a notice of October 2019 by the municipality to start the project. Furthermore, a fine of INR 10,000 was imposed for not setting up the project even after the warning.

As per official records, fine worth INR 47 lakh has been collected till October 2020 regarding the matter.
