According to the data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the civic body has spent INR 9 crores on private security guards deployed at railway stations, airports and COVID Care centres for screening of passengers for coronavirus.

On Wednesday, September 22, a proposal was approved by the civic body’s Standing Committee.

As per the proposal, between November 2020 and June 2021, the BMC was screening outbound passengers at railway stations like Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai Central Railway Station, Dadar and Bandra.

There were 150 security guards deployed at various places. Moreover, it said that the security services will continue till September 30.

The BMC has already paid INR 7 crores so far and the remaining INR 2 crores will be paid now.

Apart from railway stations, the guards were posted at Sahar Airport, Bandra-Kurla Complex Covid Centre, Dahisar Octroi Naka Covid Centre and Dahisar Kandarpada Covid Centre since January 2020.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, Mumbai had been the hotspot for coronavirus. In order to curb the impact of COVID-19, the BMC in December last year stated that it had spent more than INR 1,000 crore in the last seven months to overcome this crisis.

Moreover, last year, when the COVID-19 crisis was at its peak, out of the total 1.20 lakhs BMC employees, around 90,000 were on field. In addition, an allowance incentive of INR 300 per day was given to the employees, officers, nurses and doctors of the health and other departments.

According to reports submitted before the standing committee, BMC has spent a total of INR 383.87 crores on the allowance of 90,000 municipal employees in a period of seven months, June to December, 2020.

Earlier, the BMC revealed that it had spent INR 10.99 crores for handling and disposal of dead bodies of coronavirus patients.
