Earlier, the decision to cut trees for Metro work received backlash from the citizens and was severely criticised by political party, Shiv Sena. Now, 116 trees are on the verge of being cut for the construction of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial at Indu Mill in Dadar.

The Indu Mill area at Veer Savarkar Road in Dadar (West) is being utilised for the construction of Bharat Ratna Babasaheb Ambedkar’s memorial. On land No. 324, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has sought BMC’s permission to cut 116 trees for the construction work. Out of the 116 trees, 79 trees will be cut whereas the remaining 37 trees will be replanted.

There are 250 trees in total in the space, out of which 116 trees need to be removed and the remaining 134 trees will remain untouched. Though 37 trees are being re-planted, these trees will also be adversely affected because of the negligible rate of success for the replanted trees being alive. Therefore, the tree-lovers are stating that all the 116 trees are going to be lifeless anyways.

Out of the total 11 acres of the Indu Mill land, the state government has permitted 6.4 acres to be used for the construction of the memorial and the remaining six acres to be kept intact since it is included in Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ).
