In a substantial development, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is to meet officials regarding the COVID-19 situation in Mumbai today.

As Mumbai on Thursday, April 1, reported the highest spike in cases of coronavirus recording 8,646 people testing positive for the disease, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar hinted that some restrictions could be introduced in the city from April 2 where hotels could be asked to operate at 50 per cent of the seating capacity and religious places might be shut completely. Meanwhile, according to reports, the Mumbai locals might be restricted to only essential services staff as in the past.

Earlier, the president of The Multiplex Association of India, Kamal Gianchandani, had made an appeal to CM Thackeray in the light of the news surrounding a temporary lockdown that may be imposed by the state government. Speaking about the same, Gianchandani stated that imposing restrictions on the multiplex’s can have a severe economic impact which has already faced a sizeable loss during the first set of lockdowns that were imposed over a year ago.

In Maharashtra, at present, there are 3,66,533 active cases in the state. With 32,641 COVID-19 patients discharged in the last 24 hours, the number of recovered soared to 24,33,368. Moreover, the COVID-19 positivity rate, recovery rate and fatality rate in Maharashtra stand at 14.3 per cent, 85.2 per cent and 1.92 per cent respectively. On the other hand, with Mumbai recording 8,646 cases in the day, it remains a major novel coronavirus hotspot in the state.
