Five constables from Vakola Police station and an assistant police inspector from Sahar Police station tested positive in a special testing drive for cops where close to 100 policemen were tested.

Shashikant Mane, the senior inspector of Sahar police station, said, “After our API tested positive we quarantined eight policemen from Sahar police station.”

By Wednesday evening, 106 police personnel across Mumbai had been tested positive for coronavirus. So far, three constables have succumbed to the disease. 

57-year-old Mumbai Police constable, Chandrakant Pendurkar passed away on April 25, Saturday while undergoing treatment for coronavirus. Pendurkar was posted at the Vakola police station and had tested positive for coronavirus a few days back. Pendurkar was the first Mumbai Police personnel to have succumbed to COVID-19. He was a resident of Worli, which has been adversely affected by the pandemic. The deceased is survived by his wife and two children.

A day later, on April 26, Mumbai Police said that another Mumbai Police constable, Sandip Surve (52) passed away during treatment. After which, on the third day on April 27, a 56-year-old head constable with the Mumbai Police died while undergoing treatment for coronavirus. Identified as Shivaji Sonawane, he was Kurla traffic division police personnel. All three policemen belonged to the 50+ age category.

After which, Mumbai Police personnel aged above 55-years and those having existing ailments have been asked to stay at home. The option for paid leave was made available on Monday by Mumbai Police chief Param Bir Singh. 

So far, a total of 141 police personnel, including 16 officers and 125 men, across Maharashtra have tested positive. On the brighter side, five officers and six policemen have recovered from the disease.
