On Tuesday, August 4, Mumbai reported 709 fresh cases of the coronavirus while the number of recoveries amounted to 873. The overall growth rate of COVID-19 in the city also showed improvement and stands at 0.87 per cent now.

According to the data shared by the BMC, the total number of cases in the city has reached 1,18,130 while the total number of deaths in Maharashtra's capital has reached 6,546. The doubling rate has also shown improvement as it reached to 80 days. As per the daily report of BMC, there are 10,399 oxygen Beds, 1,762 ICU beds and 1,032 ventilator beds in the city's health infrastructure.

The city has been experiencing a reduction in the daily cases of the coronavirus. This comes as a piece of good news for Mumbai as the widening gap between the number of tests conducted and the positive cases are being attributed to many factors, namely, increased testing across the community. Since July 3, the BMC had permitted everyone to conduct testing for the coronavirus without a prescription from the medical practitioner. With the scope of testing now extended from targeted testing of symptomatic and high-risk contacts to the general population, some experts believe that this has resulted in a positive outcome.

The civic body had earlier permitted shops on both sides of the road in Mumbai to remain operational on all days. Earlier, the shops were permitted to operate only on a P1-P2 basis whereby shops on one side of the road remained open on odd days, and those on the other side remained open on even days. While liquor can now be sold across the counter, shopping malls are also to be operational without the exception of cinema halls and restaurants.
