According to the latest reports, on Thursday, February 24, the Mumbai Police prohibited the gathering of over five people for participation in rallies, demonstrations and protest marches till March 8.

The prohibitory orders have been issued under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), but the reasons for the same haven't been mentioned cited narratives.

However, speculations have been made in accounts that the protests and counter-protests by political parities over NCP leader Nawab Malik's arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) could have resulted in the issuance of the order.

Based on accounts, marriage ceremonies, funerals, meetings of cooperative societies, organizations, events organized in clubs have been exempted from the prohibition. In addition to this, any march or peaceful rally that has the requisite police permission has also been exempted.

Moreover, the prohibition is not applicable at cinema halls, theatres, places of public entertainment, government offices, courts, semi-government offices, schools, colleges, shops amongst other establishments, companies as well as factories.

A separate order has reportedly been issued by the police that bans the use of paragliders, balloons, high-rise crackers and flash laser light beams in areas under its jurisdiction from February 20 to April 20. It has been stated by the police that those violating the order will be booked under section 188 of the CrPC.
