Exclusive: BMC office sealed; two employees from Disaster Management Cell test positive for Coronavirus

Official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that two employees have tested positive for COVID-19. Keeping the safety protocols in mind, the BMC headquarters in Mumbai has been sealed immediately.

As per an update received on Monday, April 20, 2020, two people from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) the Disaster Management Cell have tested positive. Keeping this in mind, officials have decided to seal the BMC Headquarters immediately.

Over a telephonic conversation, BMC CPRO told Mumbai Live, "Two employees from the BMC's disaster management team have tested positive for coronavirus and due to this, BMC office would be sealed keeping the safety protocols in mind. All the BMC officials will now be tested for the virus."

However, Mumbai Live sources have informed that three people from BMC's team have tested positive. No additional information regarding the third case was provided by the BMC official.

CM Uddhav Thackeray while addressing the citizens via social media has asked everyone to cooperate in these difficult times. He also stated that officials in Maharashtra have conducted more than 66,000 tests till date and further announced that the lockdown restrictions may be lifted partially in districts where zero COVID-19 cases have been reported. Further, industries can begin to operate in green zones.

Further, in a recent development on Sunday, the State Government has directed the respective departments to stop using sanitisation domes and tunnels after stating that there was no scientific evidence to show they were effective.

BMC and state government officials are working hard, along with Mumbai Police, to contain the spread of the virus in slum pockets of the city. With an increase in the number of cases, health officials have initiated door to door testing in Dharavi slums, and the same was conducted in Worli Koliwada. 

As of April 19, 2020, the number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra increased by 552 and the total saw a jump to 4200, with 2724 cases in Mumbai. Officials have sealed more than 700 areas in the city as containment zones and curfew-like restrictions have been imposed keeping the crisis in mind.
