According to the latest reports, even with monsoons yet to set into the city, diseases such as malaria, dengue and gastroenteritis are on the rise. In the first five days of June, almost 60 hospitalizations were registered owing to malaria, while 80 were due to gastroenteritis and 10 were because of dengue.

Based on accounts, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) health department elaborated on how a considerable number of gastroenteritis cases were from Bandra, Khar, Santacruz, Mazgaon, Nagpada and Byculla. On the other hand, the majority of the malaria cases were seen in Worli, Lower Parel, Prabhadevi, Mahalaxmi, Mazgaon, Nagpada and Byculla.

On a positive note, there have not been any deaths owing to these diseases. Similarly, BMC's executive health officer, Dr Mangala Gomare was quoted in narratives elaborating on how with malaria cases rising, precautions should be taken to prevent the breeding of mosquitos.

Experts believe that metro work, amongst other construction activities, is driving malaria and dengue numbers in south Mumbai wards.

It has been reported that symptoms of dengue and malaria reflect such as high fever, extreme body ache, nausea and headache. Between January and June, 950 cases of malaria, 94 cases of dengue, over 24 cases of leptospirosis, 2441 of gastroenteritis and 204 of hepatitis have been recorded in Mumbai.
