Ghatkopar- Work has begun on the construction of an escalator at Ghatkopar railway station’s platform no. 4.
This work had been stalled for the last many days. The new escalator will help senior citizens and pregnant women to commute. “For some reason, the work was stalled but now the work has commenced and in next three months, it will be operational,” said Prasad Lautan, station deputy manager.
While the Western Railway has escalators at 26 stations, including some main stations like Borivali,Andheri,Dadar, the Central Railway has sent a requirement of 57 escalators for the city to the railway ministry. The plan is to install at least one escalator at each of the suburban stations, wherever feasible.
Last year,  a budget of Rs. 45 crore was earmarked towards escalators, foot over bridges (FOBs), ATVMs for Mumbai suburban section among other allocations in the annual Union Railway budget.
This year, the CR has reportedly proposed two escalators at Byculla, Sion, Kurla, Kalwa, Chunnabhatti, Tilak Nagar, Govandi, three escalators at Panvel and one escalator each at Neral, Parel, Currey Road, Chinchpokali and other suburban stations. The Ghatkopar escalator has been cleared for construction a while ago, but appears to be taking shape now.
