As the cases of coronavirus witness a decline in Mumbai, several migrant labourers have reportedly returned back to the city.

Amidst the second wave of the coronavirus, these daily wage labourers had left the financial capital due to the coronavirus induced lockdown. However, according to sources, in the months of May and June, 28 lakh people have returned to the city.

Moreover, in the months of May and June, a total of 7,8,956 people have returned to Mumbai by commuting on the Western Railways whereas 28,26,226 people have returned to Maharashtra by trains ferrying people from other states.

With the outbreak of the coronavirus, between March 2020 and June 2020, more than one crore workers migrated to their respective states on foot. While many workers were injured, some even lost their lives. The information was given in writing in the Lok Sabha on September 22, 2020.

On the other hand, in view of the pandemic, several migrant workers had left the city of Mumbai and returned to their home towns. To facilitate the same, respective state governments had arranged special trains, with an aim to avoid hassle for the citizens. Information shared by Mahendra Kalyankar, commissioner, labour, and director, industrial safety and health stated that over 3.2 million people had left the state of Maharashtra and returned back to different states.

Since April 1, 2021, more than 11 lakh people had left the state and returned to Uttar Pradesh and more than 4 lakh had returned to Bihar, mentioned Kalyankar, who further added that COVID-19 was not the only reason for them to travel as the summer season was also considered the best for harvest and marriages. Moreover, it is said that the people would return back to the state and their travel for only seasonal and pandemic was just one of the several factors.
