Forest officials in Mumbai recently caught a young leopard in Aarey Milk Colony, and as per reports released recently, this leopard is believed to be the sibling of a cat which has attacked several people in the last few weeks.

The patterns found on this animal are different from the one which attacked the residents before and this could have led to such a conclusion. Officials have currently caged the animal and are investigating the matter.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forest–Wildlife, Sunil Limaye, in a conversation with the Mid-Day said that the department is planning to fit a chip – radio collar – on the animal, however, the same will depend on the availability. The motive behind fitting this device is to help the forest officials understand the movement of the animal in Aarey forest. Besides this, experts can draw strategies which can help in conversation further.

The animal, which is said to be 1.5 to 2 years old, was caged last week in Aarey Milk Colony and was taken to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Staff members have been asked not to get closer to the animal.

Aarey forest has approximately five to seven leopards, and many of these have attacked the residents living near the forest. Data released by the department reveals that a total of six people have died to animal attacks in the last one month, i.e., since August 31, 2021. Many locals were left injured as they claim that the animals charged at them. Understanding the same, the team set up a cage on October 2, 2021, however, no animal was seen that night. Initiatives like patrolling, awareness programs, etc. are being planned by the forest department to prevent and help people understand the animal attacks thereby keep themselves safe.
