In order to ensure more safety and keep an eye on crime incidents against women, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil on Wednesday, January 26, launched 91 Nirbhaya Squads in Mumbai.

An event was organised by the Mumbai Police to launch the 'Nirbhaya Squad' and the Nirbhaya Empowerment centre to protect women. While speaking at the event virtually, CM Thackeray said that the Maharashtra government will work to ensure that the state becomes the "saviour" of women in India.

Maharashtra is a 'Shakti Pujak' (worshiper of women power) state. Women are always worshipped and respected in this state. Nirbhaya squad will ensure the safety of women who are working in various fields so that they don't feel helpless, Thackeray stated, adding "We have to protect women. We will also strengthen the police force."

After the inaugural, Aaditya Thackeray stated that these squads consist of specially trained female and male officers and they will be stationed across Mumbai 24x7.

Nirbhaya Squad is a special unit comprised of female officers to combat sexual harassment and other crimes against women. One can dial the hotline number '103', which has been activated, for immediate assistance.

He added, women should be allowed to roam freely, adding that it is an important step in making Maharashtra a fear-free state.

Moreover, recently, Mumbai Police released a short video with the theme "Fearless women - a signature of Mumbai!", this time roping in actor Amitabh Bachchan and filmmaker Rohit Shetty in order to create awareness about the Nirbhaya Squads.

This development comes as rape incidences against women and children have been rapidly growing across the state, including Mumbai.
