The Maharashtra government has restricted inter-district travel between municipal corporations within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) except for official purposes and essential activities like medical purposes. The Maharashtra government had earlier announced a lockdown extension across the state till the end of July.

This notification has further decreased the times for non-essential shops to remain open. According to the new notification authorized by the government on Monday, they have been restricted to 9 in the morning to 5:00 pm. Essential shops like medical stories and groceries can remain open as per regular timings. The state officials had earlier stated that these new guidelines had to be introduced as there were too many people on the streets not following the protocols of social distancing.

However, all the other relaxations allowed by the government under the “Mission Begin Again” policy remains in place, for example, the 10 per cent attendance in private offices, taxis, autos and cabs to remain operational etc.

The Mumbai Police had earlier in order to contain the spread of coronavirus had resolved to opt for strict measures that it issued on Sunday. The Mumbai Police can now punish you for venturing 2 km away from the house for any work, apart from essential services or going to the office.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Prannoy Ashok stated that people started venturing out of their houses as soon as the lockdown restrictions had eased up. He further added that the threat of coronavirus has not been eliminated completely, therefore, it is important for the people to follow the rules of social distancing. In such a situation, we all need social distantness, sanitization, constant hand washing. The Mumbai Police further took to Twitter to announce guidelines for the same.

The reason for this stringent measure lies in the fact that the citizens of the city have been overcrowding on the beaches and markets, often disrupting the protocols of social distancing.
