Maharashtra Congress on Monday protested against the Narendra Modi government over the rising fuel prices across the country. The party staged a statewide agitation in Pune saying that the increase in petrol and diesel prices is causing trouble for people who are already suffering due to the coronavirus outbreak.

During the protest, Maharashtra Congress President Balasaheb Thorat said that the protest against the fuel price hike is happening all over the country. “The commoners are suffering due to the hiked prices of petrol and diesel. The government is putting another burden on those already suffering due to the coronavirus,” he added.

Thorat, who holds the Revenue Ministry portfolio in the Uddhav Thackeray government, informed that all the Congressmen have requested the President to ask the central government to withdraw the hike in fuel prices. The hike in petrol and diesel prices is robbing the pockets of the commoner, he added.

Taking to Twitter, Thorat labelled the hike in fuel prices by the central government as a ‘loot’ and said that the Congress will continue to protest until the government understands the plight of the common man.

Demanding to reduce the fuel prices, Congress leader Mohan Joshi also hit out at the Centre saying that the fuel prices are less in the international market but the government is taking more money from the people. He asserted that the petrol and diesel should be provided at ₹40 per litre instead of being sold at ₹90 per litre.

Senior Congress leader Ashok Chavan also slammed the central government over the surge in fuel prices which has been continued for 21 days now. BJP came into Power by promising low fuel prices, but since then Modi government have not given a single respite to people. Despite low rates of crude oil they are increasing the fuel prices. Their dupery is being exposed with passing day (sic),” he tweeted.

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and senior Congress leader, Prithviraj Chavan also participated in the protest in Sangli. The petrol prices have been increased to ₹87.19 in Mumbai while the diesel is being sold at ₹77.72. Meanwhile, diesel (₹80.53) remains costlier then patrol (₹80.43) in Delhi.
