According to the latest reports, Maharashtra is facing a flattening of the COVID-19 curve and thus, the state is planning to offer further relaxations of the coronavirus induced curbs this week. However, the compulsory wearing of masks in public spaces is anticipated to continue until the WHO declares the novel virus as an endemic disease.

Earlier last week, the Centre wrote to the states asking them to review the additional curbs since the positivity rate in India has reduced significantly. In light of this, the public health department conducted a high-level meeting to undertake a decision on the easing of curbs.

Dr Pradeep Vyas, additional chief secretary, Maharashtra, was quoted by the Indian Express elaborating on how they have already relaxed the majority of the restrictions in districts outside Mumbai and Pune.

Vyas reportedly added that there still persist certain curbs such as a 50 per cent limit in movie theatres as well as swimming pools. He remarked that while discussions are being undertaken to ease the limitations, a final decision is yet awaited.

A member of the task force elucidated in the account that in the previous meeting certain members of the COVID-19 task force recommended the gradual relaxation of curbs in phases till March. They are of the opinion that is unlikely a newly deadly variant will emerge but they look to remain cautious.

Thus, the member added that certain relaxations will be proclaimed this week but complete relaxation will be undertaken in phases. Maharashtra cabinet minister Aaditya Thackeray had earlier remarked on how the wearing of masks will continue to remain in force.
